Introducing the Tabor Applied Leadership Institute: A New Chapter for Leadership Development in South Australia

The need for well-rounded, purpose-driven leadership is growing across every sector in South Australia. In response to this, Tabor College has launched the Applied Leadership Institute, a new initiative aimed at equipping current and emerging leaders with the tools they need to lead with clarity, confidence and care.

This institute is not about creating leadership in theory, but about fostering leadership in practice. It focuses on building capability, deepening understanding of self and others, and developing practical skills to navigate the realities of modern leadership environments.

The Purpose Behind the Institute

The Applied Leadership Institute was established to provide a space for individuals to grow in leadership through thoughtful, evidence-based programs. The focus is not simply on technical skill, but on the personal and interpersonal dynamics that make leadership effective.

The institute is built on three key ideas:

  • Leadership is more than a position; it is a responsibility that requires self-awareness, courage and insight.

  • Healthy leadership flows from a strong understanding of people, systems and purpose.

  • Leadership growth requires support, reflection and continual development over time.

By creating a space that combines practical coaching, leadership psychology, and real-world insight, the institute aims to serve individuals across business, education, faith-based work, not-for-profit service and beyond.

Who Is Leading the Work

The institute is led by Dr Darryl Cross and Strauss Viljoen, both of whom bring significant experience in leadership and personal development.

Dr Darryl Cross is a clinical and organisational psychologist with over 30 years of experience. He has worked with leaders across a range of industries and has taught in both university and professional contexts. His areas of expertise include leadership dynamics, emotional intelligence, motivation, workplace culture and coaching for performance. Dr Cross is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and an internationally certified executive and personal coach.

Strauss Viljoen is the Executive Director of the Applied Leadership Institute and also serves as Chief Marketing Officer at Tabor College. He has worked in leadership and management roles for over two decades, across corporate, education and not-for-profit contexts. Strauss holds a Master of Leadership, a postgraduate qualification in marketing, and a Bachelor of Law. His approach to leadership is shaped by a deep interest in organisational health, strategic thinking and personal development.

Together, Dr Cross and Mr Viljoen bring both academic insight and practical experience to the leadership programs on offer.

The Approach

Programs through the Applied Leadership Institute are designed to be engaging, reflective and relevant. One of the initial offerings is the Foundational Certificate in Leadership, a two-day program focused on core leadership principles.

Topics covered in this training include:

  • Understanding personal leadership style

  • Building emotional intelligence

  • Navigating conflict and difficult conversations

  • Time and energy management

  • Leading teams and managing change

Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own leadership approach and apply what they learn in their current roles and contexts. The aim is to support growth that is sustainable and meaningful, not just performative or transactional.

A Partnership with Tabor College

The Applied Leadership Institute operates in partnership with Tabor College, building on the college’s commitment to education that supports the whole person. This collaboration allows the institute to draw on Tabor’s experience in teaching, formation and community engagement, while also developing new and distinct pathways for leadership training.

The hope is that this work will contribute to a healthier leadership culture across South Australia, grounded in values, strengthened by knowledge and shaped through relationships.
