Tabor’s Counselling Programs Achieve National-First Accreditation Under New PACFA Standards

Tabor College has reached an important milestone, becoming the first institution in Australia to have counselling programs assessed under the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia’s (PACFA) new Accreditation Standards for Counselling Programs.

Following a comprehensive review process, Tabor’s Bachelor of Counselling and Master of Counselling Practice have been recommended for accreditation without conditions until 31 December 2030.

This outcome is particularly significant because it represents PACFA’s first assessment conducted under the new standards, positioning Tabor at the forefront of counselling education in Australia.

The accreditation review recognised a range of strengths across Tabor’s counselling programs, including a highly supportive and student-centred learning environment, strong staff-student relationships, and a clear commitment to student wellbeing. The assessment team also highlighted the depth of professional and clinical experience among Tabor’s academic staff and supervisors, many of whom continue to work in professional counselling practice or contribute to counselling and psychotherapy research.

Experiential learning was another key area of recognition. Through counselling skills development, reflective practice, supervised placements and learning opportunities within the Life Design Counselling Centre, students are equipped with the knowledge, practical skills and professional capabilities needed to work effectively with clients in real-world settings.

As Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Sam Smith explains:
“To be recommended for accreditation without conditions until 2030 is a strong affirmation of the quality of our programs, the commitment of our staff and the experience we provide for students preparing for professional counselling practice.”

The outcome also reflects the collaborative culture that underpins Tabor’s counselling programs. PACFA commended the professionalism and dedication of academic and professional staff, as well as the positive learning environment created for students throughout their studies.

Available both in Adelaide and online, Tabor’s counselling programs provide flexible pathways for students across South Australia and beyond to pursue a career that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

For those considering a future in counselling, this accreditation outcome provides confidence that Tabor’s programs meet the highest professional standards while offering a supportive learning environment focused on student growth, practical experience and professional readiness.
